Superintendent Steve Walts, School Board Vice Chairman Lillie Jessie (Occoquan), County Supervisor Ruth Anderson (Occoquan), and Congressman Gerry Connolly’s representative Briana Sewell celebrated Occoquan Elementary School’s success with students and staff at an assembly Dec. 15. The school is one of two in Virginia recognized as a National Title I Distinguished School.
Outstanding orchestra students from Prince William County Public Schools at the middle and high school levels will combine their talents for an afternoon of music at the upcoming All-County Orchestra program, scheduled for Saturday, January 28 at 4 p.m. at Woodbridge Senior High School. The annual event gives young musicians a chance to perform challenging scores under the direction of a guest conductor.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) recently completed the 2016 cotton boll weevil survey and detected no weevils in Virginia. The destructive pest was first detected in the state in 1922.

Virginia Department of Transportation reports that road crews are ready to report tonight, Friday, Dec. 16, for a forecast of low temperatures, freezing rain, sleet and snow across northern Virginia. As many plan to move across the region for shopping and other holiday preparations this weekend, the Virginia Department of Transportation asks drivers to plan accordingly
The governor discussed revenues and taxes, spending and saving and said Virginia is currently missing out on $250-300 million a year that it could collect under the Marketplace Fairness Act. He is asking Congress to pass this legislation so internet sales are taxed the same was as brick-and-mortar sales.
Hoping to bring down the cost of generic drugs, Virginia's Attorney General Mark R. Herring on Dec. 16 joined with 18 other state attorneys general in filing a federal lawsuit against six generic drug-makers. The suit alleges that the firms conspired to artificially inflate and manipulate prices and to reduce competition in the market for two drugs in the United States: doxycycline hyclate delayed release, an antibiotic, and glyburide, an oral diabetes medication.
