A newly hired victim’s advocate at the University of Mary Washington is now an additional confidential resource for students at the Fredericksburg, VA college who may have experienced sex- or gender-based violence.

Passion and excellence in the business community were celebrated Feb. 28 when the Prince William Chamber of Commerce held its annual Business Awards banquet at Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas.

Classroom teacher turned Virginia Secretary of Education, Atif Qarni, has not forgotten his students. Qarni started the school year as an eighth-grade civics teacher at Beville Middle School in Prince William County. After winning the November Gubernatorial Election, Ralph Northam appointed Qarni to the state’s top educational post in Richmond. Shortly after settling in, he invited his former students to his new home.

Samantha Boateng organized the Read2Lead campaign as her International Baccalaureate (IB) Studies Creativity Activity Service Project at Gar-Field High School. She began collecting book donations to send to Ghana. With help from her school community, the campaign was a huge success and it inspired her to go a step further. She founded the Read2Lead non-profit organization.

In celebration of Black History Month, the mother of a Chris Yung Elementary School student and her sorority sisters set out to compile a set of books that positively feature main characters who are black. They donated the 35-book collection to the school library.

Special education teachers Alana Wamsley and Cesar Maisonet are now special education administrative coordinators.

Route 1 traffic will be shifting onto new pavement. The northbound lanes between Mount Pleasant Drive and Dawson Beach Road will shift Friday beginning at 10 a.m.; the southbound lanes between Occoquan Road and Marys Way will shift Monday beginning at 10 a.m. Both shifts are weather permitting.
