On Dec. 29, 2020, Prince William County detectives with the police department's Special Victims Unit, in coordination with Child Protective Services, concluded an investigation into a sexual assault that was reported to have occurred at a residence located in the Woodbridge (22192) area of Prince William County between January 2015 and March 2018.

New law effective Jan. 1: holding cell phone while driving is illegal

Effective Jan. 1, 2021, it is illegal to hold a handheld personal communications device (e.g., a smartphone) while driving a moving motor vehicle on Virginia highways. This new law is one of many ways the state is buckling down on distracted driving. The Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles noted that in 2019, there were 120 deaths, 13,258 injuries and 34,850 crashes attributed to distracted driving, including using a mobile phone. The new law, passed in July 2020, attempts to address this growing problem.

UMW extends freshman acceptance date due to federal snafu over financial aid form
The University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg has extended the enrollment deadline for admitted first-year undergraduate students to June 1, 2024. This allows an additional month for students and families to review financial aid.
