With consumer prices down over the past year, monthly Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for nearly 65 million Americans will not automatically increase in 2016.
Governor Terry McAuliffe Oct. 14 signed an executive order directing actions to keep guns out of dangerous hands by better enforcing existing Virginia law. The Governor signed the executive order at a press conference alongside U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, Attorney General Mark Herring and members of the law enforcement and gun safety advocacy community to strength en existing laws.
Nancy Harrover, Sudley's United Methodist Women (UMW) chair and dinner co-chairs Terry Abate and Karen Milihram, the tradition started in 1923 with 15 gallons of oysters. Today, the cooks prepare 40 gallons of oysters, 32 large turkeys and 18 turkey breasts. Sdes include mashed potatoes, dressing, green beans, Waldorf salad and more. Over the past five years, 1,100 to 1,200 in-house and carryout meals were served.
At 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, Oct. 14, the Virginia Department of Elections (ELECT) launched its new Citizen Portal. This will allow Virginia voters to apply for an absentee ballot online. The secure online system will take voters through the application process step by step and allow users to sign the application using their Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) credentials, building on the success of ELECT’s online voter registration system.

The Special Education Department services students in numerous areas including Autism, Deafness, Blindness, Developmental Delays, Emotional Disability, Hearing Impaired and Intellectual Disability as well as Specific Learning Disability, Orthopedic, Speech and Language Impairments.
A series of three evening workshops for parents, educators, and community members will provide information on the special education process. The sessions, Oct. 15, 22 & 29, will be held from 7-9 p.m. in room 1101 A/B at the Kelly Leadership Center, 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas. PWCS Office of Special Education staff will present.
Students and their parents are invited to investigate the variety of programs available to students as high school options Oct. 26-27. Two upcoming general information sessions will introduce Prince William County Schools' Specialty and Career & Technical Education programs and offer an overview of the application process.
Virginia Cooperative Extension’s four-part health education series, Living Well with Diabetes, begins on Thursday, Oct. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. Classes are held at the McCoart Administrative Center, 1 County Complex Court, Prince William 22192. A light meal is served from 6 to 6:30 p.m. as part of the class.
