Virginia to transition to elecronic and phone reporting of game harvesting in September

Beginning Sept. 1, 2021, all hunters (including those who are not required to purchase a license) who harvest a deer, turkey, bear, bobcat, or elk, will need to check their harvest by calling DWR (866-GOT-GAME), logging on to gooutdoorsvirginia.com, or by using the mobile app harvest reporting system, GoOutdoorsVa (free through the app store).

Hiking restrictions to lift on Appalachian Trail Wednesday morning; fire 90% contained, NPS says

The 19.8-mile section of the Appalachian Trail that was closed by the Catawba Valley Fire will reopen tomorrow morning, May 2, at 8:00 a.m., according to a National Park Service news release issued shortly after 6 p.m. May 1.

Hikers need to know about fire in Appalachian Trail area near Roanoke; shuttles available

Shuttles for Appalachian Trail hikers are in place to transport hikers from the 311 Gap to the Daleville 220 Park and Ride. A 19.8-mile stretch of the A.T. remains closed. State Route 311 to State Route 220 including the service road to McAffe Knob also remains closed. Firefighters have dealt with numerous downed trees.

Half-staff flags in memory of Va. Tech shootings in 2007

Governor Glenn Youngkin ordered that the flags of the United States of America and the Commonwealth of Virginia be flown at half-staff on all state and local buildings and grounds in the Commonwealth of Virginia in memory and respect of the 16th Anniversary of the Virginia Tech shooting. Some 32 people were killed in this incident.

Pat Conroy dies; former mayor of Town of Occoquan
