Governor signs bill to require biennial review of concussion policies

Governor Ralph Northam signed legislation Feb. 22 designed to support and improve the safety of student athletes across Virginia. House Bill 1930, introduced by Delegate Richard Bell, requires the Board of Education to collaborate with stakeholders to biennially update its guidelines on policies related to concussions.

Hikers need to know about fire in Appalachian Trail area near Roanoke; shuttles available

Shuttles for Appalachian Trail hikers are in place to transport hikers from the 311 Gap to the Daleville 220 Park and Ride. A 19.8-mile stretch of the A.T. remains closed. State Route 311 to State Route 220 including the service road to McAffe Knob also remains closed. Firefighters have dealt with numerous downed trees.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources announced that a Delaware resident won the 2018 Maryland Black Bear Conservation Stamp Design Contest, while the award for top Migratory Game Bird Stamp Design went to a resident of Des Moines, Iowa.

Maryland seeking to reduce minimum size of striped bass in time for summer fishing season

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources reports that it is moving forward with emergency regulations that will reduce the minimum size of striped bass for charter boat and recreational anglers in the summer and fall fishery in the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries from 20 to 19 inches.

A funeral service was held on Feb. 15 in Dumfries for John Harper Jr., former member of the Prince William County School Board. Covington-Harper Elementary School was named, in part, for Harper.
