WSHS honors former principal Dr. Thomas Gaul and school’s notable theatre program

Woodbridge High School has a long history and thousands of alumni. To honor both, the school created an Alumni and History Wall to represent students, staff, faculty, and programs. Annually, Woodbridge hosts an alumni event to add the newest images to the wall. This year the school honored one of its former principals and the theatre program.

Professional anglers will guide kids to “Catch a Special Thrill” Sept. 15

Thirty children ages 5-14 will visit Leesylvania State Park, in Woodbridge and go fishing with volunteer professional anglers from large bass boats on the Potomac River Sept. 15. he program is designed to give children with special needs and their caretakers the opportunity to leave their problems on shore and enjoy a day of fishing with professional bass fishermen. Included in the day’s events will be water safety, boating, and natural resource demonstrations.

Orrison appointed to governing council of Virginia Association of Museums

Robert Orrison of Manassas, who manages two Prince William County historic sites for the county's Historic Preservation Division, will sit on the governing council of the Virginia Association of Museums as Director of Historic House Museums.

Barnard named acting Prince William County police chief

Deputy Police Chief Lt. Col. Barry Barnard will become Prince William County VA's acting police chief effective Sept. 1, 2012, the date Chief Charlie T. Deane retires.

Youth walk in the footsteps of history at Civil War camp at Brentsville Courthouse

A dozen campers ages 8-13 tried out the life of a Civil War soldier in Prince William County recently at Basic Civil War Camp at Brentsville Courthouse Centre in Bristow. David Born, historical program coordinator, and Michael Riley, site manager for the Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre, led the young history buffs. The program was developed by Prince William County VA's Department of Historic Preservation.

Congress to tackle federal government’s “customer service”

How the federal government treats people who contact government agencies is at the heart of legislation introduced by U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner (D-VA) and Ron Johnson (R-WI). The Government Customer Service Improvement Act of 2012 aims to set standards for service that customers should expect to receive from the federal government. Every agency will have a designated Service Improvement Officer.

Earthquake drill to recall first anniversary of Mineral quake

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management has announced that there will be a regional earthquake drill Oct. 18 at 10:18 a.m. in the southeast United States, and Virginia has signed on as a participant. Individuals, businesses, schools and organizations are invited to participate. Other states and other areas around the world are also participating in earthquake drills, some at different times.

Patriot High School’s soccer team becomes part of the community–on and off the field

The soccer team at the new Patriot High School in Nokesville VA completed several service projects in addition to their daily practices and game schedule. Team coaches encouraged the working together on service projects in the community to build a sense of camaraderie among the soccer players both on and off the field. The high school opened in September 2011 and had no senior class for the 2011-12 school year.

Learn how to camp outdoors June 23 at Leesylvania State Park in PWC

Virginia State Park personnel will teach the general public about camping outdoor during the Great American Backyard Campout that will be held this Saturday, June 23, at all 35 state parks. A special group camping experience will be held for novice or firsttime campers at two nearby locations. In Prince William County, the special program will be at Leesylvania State Park off US 1 in Woodbridge. In Fauquier County, the special camping program will be at Sky Meadows State Park off US 17 between I-66 and US 50.
