August 17 update on Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy in Virginia

On August 15, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) reported that its Animal Health Laboratory in Warrenton confirmed a diagnosis of Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) on two horses from Culpeper County. A third horse on the quarantined farm developed a fever the evening of August 16 and tested positive for the neuropath genic strain of the Equine Herpes Virus -1. The quarantine is extended until September 6th.

Micron gift to be used to renovate engineering lab at George Mason’s Manassas campus

Micron Technology Foundation has donated $125,000 to fund the renovation of laboratory space for the Volgenau School of Engineering at George Mason University. The gift will underwrite the renovation of existing general-purpose space into a state-of-the-art characterization and fabrication lab in Bull Run Hall at the Science and Technology Campus in Manassas.

George Mason wins 10-year, multi-million-dollar grant to aid Dept. of Homeland Security

George Mason University will lead a consortium of universities and law enforcement agencies to investigate patterns of criminal activities and forensics, and develop strategies to predict and disrupt transnational crime. The 10-year, multimillion-dollar grant is among the largest research awards the university has received, with $3.85 million committed for its first year of operation.

Two state troopers die when Va. State Police helicopter crashes outside Charlottesville

U.S. Foods to expand in Prince William County; expansion to create 100 new jobs over next 5 years

UPDATED - Governor Terry McAuliffe has approved a $350,000 grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund to assist Prince William County with a renovation-expansion of U.S. Foods' distribution facility in the Manassas area. Funding and services to support the company's employee training activities for about 100 new jobs over the next five years will be provided through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program, according to the Governor's Office.
