Shooting Investigation *UPDATE – On June 25, the male suspect involved in the shooting at the Quality Inn located at 1109 Horner Rd in Woodbridge on June 12 died as a result of his injuries.

Apple Federal Credit Union (FCU) recently announced that Larry Kelly, president and chief executive officer, will retire at the end of June. Andrew (Andy) C. Grimm, Apple FCU’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, will succeed Kelly July 1, 2017. The Apple FCU Board of Directors reached its decision after a nationwide search, a news release said.

Hands-on learning took on a new dimension this year for dozens of students who designed and installed wildlife habitats on school grounds. Habitat plantings are slightly different than pollinator gardens or vegetable gardens, in that they incorporate native plants to provide yearlong shelter and food for a variety of wildlife, including birds, butterflies, native bees, dragonflies, amphibians, and reptiles.

Faadil Mohammed, a freshman at Osbourn Park High School, won first place at the Gaithersburg Book Festival with his short story, “Hell-th Insurance.” Colgan High School’s Shelby Bailey tied for third place and won Fan Favorite with her story, “Spotless.” Also recognized as a winner was Naomi Kline – Osbourn Park High School, grade 11.
