Meals on Wheels needs volunteer drivers. SERVE needs groups to provide weekend meals at the shelter. Two groups need volunteers to teach adults how to read - training provided. Washington Nationals need mentors for Youth Baseball Academy.

The Master Gardener program, hosted by the Prince William Virginia Cooperative Extension, is looking for volunteers who want to learn and become experts on gardening.

Hot air balloon festival at Flying Circus Aerodrome in Bealeton Aug. 18-19

Flying Circus Aerodrome will host its annual hot air balloon extravaganza. Gates will open at 6 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 18-19 for the early balloon flights and the aerodrome stays open until dark. Balloons will only fly in the early morning and evening when the winds are light. More than a dozen hot air balloons will be flying.

First-ever folk festival Oct. 20 at Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest

Passing of Boyd Alexander, 90, of Occoquan

Boyd Alexander was a kind soul and a dear friend who loved Occoquan immensely, chronicled it beautifully in his wonderful photographs, served faithfully on the board of the Occoquan Historical Society, and was always generous with words of gratitude and praise. An officer in the Air Force during the Korean War, he had a long and distinguished career in government.

Sandra Heefner of Powhatan, member of Lake Ridge Baptist Church

Sandra Lea Nelson Heefner, a strong Christian woman who was a member of the Lake Ridge Baptist Church in Woodbridge, VA for more than 30 years, died Dec. 18, 2021. She loved to sing in church and was passionate about teaching young children. A service will be held at Lake Ridge Baptist Church at a later date.
