Virginia Department of Transportation asks drivers to plan now for their commutes Tuesday, as several inches of snow are forecast to impact both the morning and evening rush hours in northern Virginia. Drivers are asked to monitor forecasts for changes or heavier weather bands that may impact their schedule, and to plan accordingly to telework, delay commutes or allow extra time for a slow and cautious trip.

The sound of a fire alarm sent Mullen Elementary School staff and students outside this morning in Manassas. After the precautionary evacuation, fire officials determined that steam in the school's kitchen had set off the alarm. All are safe and back in class, according to a news release from Prince William County Schools.

All Prince William County public schools will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 27. Work is continuing in an effort to reopen schools 2 hours late on Thursday, conditions permitting. Any changes will be announced by 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

Crews are making significant progress on 16,000 subdivision streets across northern Virginia. The Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) goal is to make one lane of all subdivisions passable by 6 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 27.
