Do you know the real meaning of the terms “spider catchers,” “barrel fever,” and “Mushroom Gentlemen”? What’s behind these terms and more than 200 others can be found in a new book by a Haymarket man, who claims direct lineage from American Revolution patriots and who is very involved with the history group known as Sons of the Revolution (SAR).

A set of classes offered by the Virginia Cooperative Extension, or VCE, will help people learn to garden using those plants that naturally help the environment.

Volunteer opportunities in the community now include organizing donated clothing, meal packing, tax preparing, teaching children golf, working a Monte Carlo Night event for Serve Our Willing Warriors, preparing and serving meals at the SERVE shelter, performing "handyman" projects for ACTS and advocating for unaccompanied immigrant children.

Serve Our Willing Warriors is in search of New Year’s volunteers to take down holiday decorations on January 4, 5 and 6.

Among the needs now are groups to provide a meal to SERVE Family Shelter residents, urgent need for age 55+ to teach 4th grade children the life skills to keep them safe alone and safe at home, skilled and unskilled weekend volunteers to help with fix-up projects across the community, tax preparers to be certified as IRS VITA Income Tax Preparer for 2018 tax season, and holiday decoration removers.

Among needs this week are 1600 children in our community need sponsors for Christmas and Salvation Army kettles still need bell ringers. Learn how you can help.

Northern Fauquier Community Park, Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) Master Gardeners, and the John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District will lead “Composting and Water Conservation Basics” on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. at Marshall Schoolhouse #18, 7592 John Marshall Highway, Marshall (next to the Recycle Center).

Superheroes, goblins, ghouls, monsters and all manner of creatures are welcome at Prince William County's public libraries this Halloween season for costume parades, scary and not-so-scary stories, trick-or-treating, games and snacks.

Included in the day are a Secret Santa shop for children to purchase items for mom, dad and others and Santa Claus, himself. Everyone can get a picture with and a candy cane from Santa between 10 a.m. to noon for a donation of $1/picture.
