Teens ready for Prince William NAACP’s ACT-SO Achievement Program annual competition April 20

The ACT-SO Achievement Program third Annual Competition will be held Saturday, April 20,  at Edward L. Kelly Leadership Center in Manassas, VA. Sponsored by the Prince William County NAACP, ACT-SO s a major youth initiative of the NAACP. ACT-SO is an acronym for Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological & Scientific Olympics.

Students compete locally and nationally in 33 fields covering STEM, Humanities, Business, Performing, Visual and Culinary Arts. The students who have signed up to compete in this third annual Prince William program represent these Prince William County high schools: Colgan, Forest Park, Garfield, Potomac, and Woodbridge.

In addition, students from Brooke Point High School in Stafford County, James Monroe high School in Fredericksburg City, Duke
Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC, and home-schooled students have joined the competition. All Northern Virginia students are eligible to participate in the Prince William County program, because it ia the only active ACT-SO program in Northern Virginia.

Gold medal winners from the local competition are eligible to compete for scholarships and prizes at the National competition July 11-14, in Las Vegas, NV. Students compete both locally and nationally in 33 areas covering STEM, Humanities, Business, Performing, Visual and Culinary Arts.

Local ACT-SO officials are seeking volunteers to serve on the fundraising committee to support travel and lodging for students going to the National competition, as well as mentors and judges for the local competition.

PW Police report passenger dies from injuries sustained in an April 15 traffic collision

The investigation revealed the driver of a 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 Pickup truck was traveling westbound on Yates Ford Rd. approaching Evans Ford Rd. when a 1993 Buick Roadmaster traveling eastbound on Yates Ford Rd. entered the intersection in front of the truck’s path of travel. The truck and Roadmaster collided within the intersection. The driver and female passenger of the Roadmaster were transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. A Pug in the Roadmaster was declared deceased on scene.
