Pre Governor’s School to be offered at Osbourn Park High School for ninth & tenth graders

The Pre-Governor’s School at Osbourn Park High School (PGS@OP) in Manassas is a preparatory program with an accelerated mathematics and science course sequence that prepares students who want to apply to the Governor’s School @ Innovation Park, which is open to juniors and seniors.

Like other Prince William County Schools’ specialty programs, students must apply to attend the .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). More details will be available at a specialty program information night at Osbourn Park High School on Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m.

According to a news release, the PGS@OP program integrates strands in biology, chemistry, and physics with mathematics, engineering concepts and laboratory research. Students will also gain critical experience in technical writing—a “must” for success in advanced-level courses, and meet several graduation requirements through required courses.

Key elements of the program include:

• Simultaneous study of two math courses in ninth grade, and functions/trigonometry (or higher mathematics course) by the end of tenth grade;

• Two science courses in tenth grade to allow for the completion of Standards of Learning physics prior to 11th grade.

• Support from a school counselor to ensure appropriate course selection in preparation for the various academic pathways available at GS@IP;

• Continuing support from a school counselor during students’ four years of study between the two campus locations (Osbourn Park and Mason/Innovation Park); and

• Enrollment in an eighth class during grades nine and 10 (Health Physical Education I and Health Physical Education II through the Virtual High School @ PWCS, unless otherwise approved by the PGS@OP Coordinator). Students applying to the PGS@OP must have completed Algebra I by the end of eighth grade, the PWCS press release said.
