Norton Lifelock subscription scam reported by Manassas City Police

Fraud on e-mail regarding “unpaid bill”
On March 3, 2023 Manassas City Police responded to the 8400 block of Stonewall Road, in the City of Manassas, where a resident reported that he received an email advising of a bill that needed to be paid for a Norton Lifelock subscription. The reporting party advised that he did not have this service but called the telephone number listed on th email.

The caller was instructed to install a program on his computer which allowed the offender access. The offender was then able to shuffle money around and convince the reporting party that money needed to be transferred back to the company (approximately $14,000). The reporting party began to suspect this to be a scam but had already transferred money prior to notifying Police.

The public is reminded not to give personal or financial data to callers you do not know. Be absolutely certain of whom you are speaking with before agreeing to exchange money.

Recovered Stolen Vehicle
On March 4, 2023, at approximately 6:00 p.m., a Manassas City Police Officer, operating a cruiser equipped with a License plate reader (LPR), received a hit for a stolen vehicle out of Prince William County near the intersection of Sudley Road and Stonewall Road, in the City of Manassas.

When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver and a passenger fled on foot in different directions. A foot pursuit ensued and the passenger was apprehended without incident. He also had narcotics in his possession upon arrest. This investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact police.
