Manassas’ 7th Neighborhood Conference moves to NOVA Manassas; free lunch and more

Most people know the Manassas campus of Northern Virginia Community College is located off Sudley Road (VA 234) just beyond Interstate 66. Some think it is just for college classes and career training after high school.

Actually “NOVA” is a community partner, with summer camps for kids, a STEM initiative for teens, extended learning for ages 50+, training classes for job seekers, community concerts and festivals and college courses of many descriptions from very early in the morning until late at night, to name a few.

To acquaint Manassas city residents with more of the benefits this valuable resource beyond the city limits can offer them, the city’s popular, trendy and free Neighborhood Conference has a new venue –on NOVA’s Manassas Campus.

The conference, now in its seventh year, is set for Saturday, Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The campus is located at 6901 Sudley Road, Manassas. Doors open at 9 a.m. for refreshments and networking.

Dr. Roger Ramsammy, Manassas Provost, will be the keynote speaker. He will focus on “Bridging Cultures, Education and Service in our Neighborhoods.”

Mayor Harry J. “Hal” Parrish II has extended a personal invitation to city residents to attend. Everything is free–registration, adult workshops, youth café, community exhibits, box lunches and door prizes, according to Kisha Wilson-Sogunro, Neighborhood Services manager for Manassas city.

Mayor Parrish will also speak at the conference.

Attendees will be able to tour the new 55,000-square-foot Harry J. Parrish building on the Manassas campus. The facility includes lecture rooms, computer laboratories, biology labs, engineering lab, art studio, offices and a large Barnes & Noble Bookstore and Café.  The LEED silver rated, three-story building was dedicated in 2012 in memory of the mayor’s late father.  Virginia delegate and former Manassas mayor Harry J. Parrish.

In addition there will be an early-bird turkey giveaway due to the generosity of 22 conference sponsors, including Walgreens, the Baker Foundation, Yellow Cab of Prince William County and NOVA-Manassas.
Walgreens will also offer flu shots.
