Hylton’s Tony Lilly tapped as High School Coach of the Week by Washington Redskins Foundation

The Washington Redskins announced today that head football coach Tony Lilly of C.D. Hylton High School in Woodbridge, Va. has been named the Redskins High School Coach of the Week for the week of Oct. 14.

Prior to his career as a high school football coach, Lilly was selected by the Denver Broncos in the third round of the 1984 NFL Draft. Lilly spent four years playing under then-Offensive Coordinator Mike Shanahan. He competed in two Super Bowls before retiring.

“He is a leader by example because of his background and experience and is able to share [with his players] about life after the NFL,” C.D. Hylton High School Athletic Director Sao Colangelo said. “Every decision he makes is in the best interest of these kids and student-athletes in general.”

A graduate of Woodbridge High School, Lilly’s desire to give back to his community is what led to a career in coaching. Currently, Lilly’s Bulldogs are 4-1. In addition to a winning record on the field, the Bulldogs maintain a strong presence in the community. The team recently participated in a Military Appreciation Night, including free admission for all military personnel and the ceremonial raising of a flag by a wounded warrior C.D. Hylton High School alumnus.

Lilly is also creating a program to promote youth literacy that will see his top student-athletes travel to local elementary schools to read to students.

The Redskins High School Coach of the Week program is designed to recognize and reward excellence in high school football coaching.

Each week during the 2013 high school football season, the Redskins will select one area high school head football coach as the Redskins High School Coach of the Week. The selection is based on the coach’s continuing commitment toward promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes, overall community involvement and overall team performance and record.

Each coach chosen throughout the high school season will receive a $1,000 donation from the NFL Youth Football Fund to his football program and a framed certificate signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins Head Coach/Executive Vice President Mike Shanahan and Redskins Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen.
