Piedmont Club in Haymarket will host a qualifier for the United States Golf Challenge (USGC), a national two-man best ball competition with open and senior divisions and open to males and females on June 29. More than 10,000 teams are expected to participate, according to a press release. The six National Championship teams will win a group of prizes including an all-expense paid trip to Ireland to represent the United States against Ireland in a Ryder Cup Style Match Play Event – called the King’s Cup.
A substantial potion of team registration fees is earmarked for the Folds of Honor. According to the press release, of the one million-plus dependents adversely affected by deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, nearly nine out of 10 do not qualify for federal scholarship assistance. Folds of Honor seeks to meet this need by providing annual educational scholarships to the military families of those who have been killed or disabled while in active duty.
Open to both men and women amateur golfers, the USGC is a three-tiered event consisting of approximately 240 Local Qualifiers (an average of 5 per state), a State Championship in each State, and a National Championship to be held at the Walt Disney World Golf Resort in October, the press release said.
National Champions in each flight receive a paid golf vacation for two valued at $5,000, a $500 gift certificate to the Disney Golf Pro Shop and two free tickets to the 2016 US Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh, according to the press release.
Another qualifier in Virginia is June 24 at Spotswood Country Club in Harrisonburg.
