Washington Gas files for rate hike in Northern Virginia

The State Corporation Commission (SCC) reports that has scheduled an April 30, 2019 hearing to consider Washington Gas’ request to increase rates for natural gas customers in its Northern Virginia and upper Shenandoah service areas. The company serves approximately 525,000 meters in Virginia.

In the meantime, the SCC news release says that by law, the gas company can increase rates on an interim basis beginning Jan. 2, 2019.

Interim rates based on the company’s request are subject to refund with interest pending a final order of the Commission, the release went on to say.

Washington Gas is asking for an increase in annual operating revenue of $37.6 million. For the typical residential customer, the company’s request would increase the monthly bill by approximately $2.10 and reflects “the lower federal corporate income tax rate,” according to a news release from the State Corporation Commission.

The April 30, 2019 hearing, at 10 a.m. will be held in Richmond in the Commission’s second-floor courtroom located in the Tyler Building at 1300 East Main Street.

Those who want to give public comment at the hearing should arrive early and sign in with the SCC bailiff.
