VDOT advises delaying using roads today, Feb. 16, until temperatures rise

Virginia Department of Transportation advises delaying travel this morning, until pavement temperatures rise and create better driving conditions. Crews continue treating roads glazed by overnight freezing rain, and as of 5:30 a.m., roads in northern Virginia range from wet, to slushy, to ice-covered, but all pavement has the potential to be slick and dangerous.

Crews remain on duty through the morning to treat icy conditions.

When you do head out, take it very slowly and:

·      Check http://www.511virginia.org or the mobile app before leaving for road conditions.

·      Allow plenty of time to warm vehicles to melt the thick layer of ice on windshields.

·      Accelerate and brake gradually

·      Use caution, especially on ramps, bridges, overpasses, hills and curves.

·      Allow plows the right of way; keep plenty of distance behind other vehicles.

VDOT’s Northern Virginia District includes Loudoun, Fairfax, Prince William and Arlington counties (Arlington maintains its own secondary roads).
