School security equipment grants for 14 county and city schools

Fourteen schools in Manassas Park, Manassas and Prince William County are due to receive a combined total of $216,591 in “School Security Equipment Grants” from the state of Virginia to improve safety and security for students and teachers, according to a news release from Gov. Bob McDonnell.

The grants will pay for security equipment, including video monitoring systems, metal detectors, electronic-access controls, visitor-identification systems and communications systems providing direct links between schools and law enforcement agencies, stated the news release.

The Manassas school division is due to receive $41,728 for R. C. Haydon Elementary and Weems Elementary.

The Manassas Park school system is slated to get $85,949 for Cougar Elementary, Manassas Park Elementary, Manassas Park High and Manassas Park Middle.

Prince William County school division is on the list to receive $88,914 for eight of the county’s older middle schools: Fred Lynn, Godwin, Graham Park, Parkside, Rippon, Saunders, Stonewall and Woodbridge.

In all, 459 Virginia schools and regional education programs qualified for $6 million in state grants, the release said. This is an average of $13,071.90 per school or educational program.
