Rep. Wexton to hold student debt relief forum Oct. 20 at 2 p.m.

Making higher education more affordable and easing the burden of student debt on Virginia families has been a top priority for me in Congress. Over the past year, there have been two major actions taken to make it easier for those most in need to have their debt forgiven – reforms to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program and President Biden’s targeted student debt relief plan.

To help constituents navigate the application process for these opportunities and have your questions answered, I’m hosting a Student Debt Relief Webinar next Thursday, October 20th at 2 p.m.

I’ll be joined by a representative from the Student Borrower Protection Center, and we’ll be taking your questions about eligibility, how and when you need to apply, which program may make sense for you, and more. You can submit questions in the comment section of the livestream once the event begins.

Below is more information about the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program reforms and the targeted federal student debt relief opportunity:

Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program:
If you have worked in public service (federal, state, local, tribal government or a non-profit organization) for 10 years or more (even if not consecutively), you may be eligible to have all your student debt canceled. Now, for a limited time, it is easier than ever to receive that forgiveness – but you must apply before October 31st. Find out more at PSLF.gov.

Targeted Federal Student Debt Relief Plan:
The new federal student debt relief program recently announced by President Biden includes one-time student loan debt relief targeted to low- and middle-income families. The U.S. Department of Education (ED) will provide up to $20,000 in debt relief to Federal Pell Grant recipients and up to $10,000 in debt relief to non-Pell Grant recipients. Borrowers with loans held by ED are eligible for this relief if their individual income is less than $125,000 (or $250,000 for households). Applications will be opening soon.
