PWC to host Attorney General’s Northern Va. regional training on reoffending prevention

Virginia Attorney General Mark R. Herring and his team will be hosting a series of five regional training sessions for local law enforcement agencies, service providers, housing, substance abuse, and mental health advocates, and others whose work helps prevent reoffending by individuals who leave Virginia jails.

The state has invested in considerable improvements in re-entry programming at its state prisons. However, that level of support and coordination for local and regional jails had been absent prior to the launch of Attorney General Herring’s re-entry initiative. Herring also hired DeVon Simmons as the state’s first local and regional jail re-entry coordinator.

Attorney General Herring will kick off the first training session on Thursday, May 4 at John Tyler Community College in Chester. The Northern Virginia workshop will be May 16,  in Prince William County, at the A.J. Ferlazzo Office Building, 15941 Donald Curtis Dr, Woodbridge, VA 22191, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Re-entry is a powerful win-win investment that makes our communities safer and saves taxpayers money,” Herring was quoted as saying in a press release. “These sessions are going to be a great opportunity for all the stakeholders in a community to come together, decide what successful re-entry looks like in their community, and develop a plan to make it happen.”

Each day-long regional training session will be tailored to the unique challenges and resources available in each community. Other sessions will be in Abingdon, Lynchburg and Hampton Roads,
