PWC teachers of the future, now Educators Rising, capture awards at annual conference

Prince William County Public Schools recently hosted the annual Virginia State Conference for Educators Rising (formerly Future Educators Association). Ten PWC high school students won awards.

Students from Battlefield High School, Colgan High School, Forest Park High School, Freedom High School, Gar-Field High School, Osbourn Park High School, Patriot High School, and Stonewall Jackson High School were among the approximately 225 students representing 30 high schools in attendance.

Teachers and school staff presented several workshops that shared information on best practices in teaching and college preparation. Admissions representatives from many Virginia colleges were at the event to talk with students about various post-high school programs.

A panel of educators from around the state served as the judges for the 19 competitions. Several students took home awards.

Hannah Spragg, a Colgan High student, won first place in the category “Children’s Literature Pre-K.”

Gar-Field High students Trinity Bovian and Alejandra Fernandez placed second in “Children’s Literature Pre-K” category.

Tati’yanna Thompson from Osbourn Park High placed second in the “Creative Lecture (TED Talk)” category.

Also from Gar-Field High, Jocelyn Gonzalez-Hernandez placed third in the category “Exploring Support Services Careers.”

Kaylen Todman, an Osbourn Park High student, took second place in the “Impromptu Lesson” category.

Madison Moore, Osbourn Park High, placed second in the category “Lesson Plan and Delivery CTE.”

Forest Park High School students Grace Eramo, Amanda Hummel and Olivia Dinkins placed third in the “Inside Our Schools” chapter event.

First and second place state award recipients are eligible to compete at the national conference scheduled for June in Orlando, Florida.

Educators Rising is a national organization designed to support students who are interested in pursuing education-related careers. Many students enrolled in the school division’s Today’s Students, Tomorrow’s Teachers and Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow courses are also members of Educators Rising. The 2019 Educators Rising Conference will be hosted by Virginia Beach City Schools.
