PWC police arrest suspect in murder of man while walking his dog

Murder Investigation – On February 20th at 9:40PM, police responded to the 3700 block of Wertz Dr in Woodbridge (22193) for a call of shots fired. Witnesses reported seeing a man fleeing the area on foot who was believed to be the shooter.

A description of the shooter was given to responding units that arrived in the area quickly. Off duty Prince William County Police Lieutenant Carlos Robles was in the area and encountered the man on Cardinal Dr. Lieutenant Robles was able to detain the man following a brief struggle. the police report said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation revealed that the victim was walking his dog in the area above when he was approached by an unknown man, identified as the accused. During the encounter, the accused shot the victim and took property belonging to the victim before fleeing the area. The accused was found to have some personal property belonging to the victim on his person at the time of the arrest.

The gun used in this incident had also been reported stolen on February 15th from a vehicle in Montclair, according to the police report.

The victim and the accused are not believed to have known one another. Following the investigation, the accused was subsequently arrested.

          Aric Alexander SMITH, 25, of 3755 Bogner Dr in Woodbridge
          Charged with first degree murder, armed robbery, and using a firearm in commission of a felony
          Court date set for June 19, 2013, held WITHOUT bond
