MOAA’s VA Council of Chapters recognizes Del. Ramadan as Legislator of Year

Delegate David I. Ramadan (R-87th District) was recently selected as the Legislator of the Year for 2014 by the Virginia Council of Chapters, Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) for his efforts to enact legislation that will extend real estate tax relief to spouses of military personnel killed-in-action (KIA).

“I was both surprised and honored to find out that I had been named the Legislator of the Year by Virginia MOAA,” Delegate Ramadan was quoted as saying, in a press release.  “My Constitutional Amendment on behalf of families of killed in action members of the Armed Forces is the least we can do to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice to secure our freedoms. I look forward to continue to serve our veterans and their families.”

Delegate Ramadan’s two years effort resulted in the measure being on the ballot in November for the citizens of the Commonwealth to vote to amend Virginia’s Constitution to grant the tax exemption. Each year the 18 Chapters of the Virginia Council of Chapters (VCOC) looks at the contributions made in support of veterans, retirees, active military and their family members by members of the Virginia General Assembly. The Legislator of the Year award is presented to that individual that has made the most significant contribution to the military community.

“We appreciate your leadership and outstanding support related to the enabling legislation which authorizes the real estate exemption for the surviving spouses of those military personnel killed in action,” said Col. Victoria Revilla, President of VCOC, in a recent letter to Delegate Ramadan. “It could not have happened without your efforts. On behalf of the 49,000 Virginia MOAA members we thank you and we look forward to your continued service and support to our Nation’s military service members, both active and retired.”

A formal presentation ceremony will be held on May 21 at Fort Myer.

Delegate Ramadan represents the 87th House of Delegates District, which includes western Prince William County and eastern Loudoun County.

He currently serves on the oldest & newest committees in the House of Delegates: Privileges & Elections (P&E) and Science & Technology (S&T), as well as General Laws Committee. He serves as the chairman of the P&E Constitutional Amendments Subcommittee. Delegate Ramadan is the co-founder and co-chairman of the Business Development Caucus. He also serves on the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission.
