Manassas house fires started with the clothes dryer

Over the weekend the City of Manassas Fire and Rescue Department responded to two house fires that were started by clothes dryers, according to city spokesman Patty Prince.

City of Manassas Fire and Rescue Department would like to remind residents that following some simple safety tips may help prevent a clothes dryer fire.

·    Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional.

·    Do not use the dryer without a lint filter.  Clean the lint filter before and after each cycle.

·    Do not forget to clean the back of the dryer where lint can build up.

·    Check the venting system behind the dryer to make sure that it is not damaged, crushed or restricted.

·    Make sure that the outdoor vent covering opens when the dryer is operating.

The City of Manassas Fire and Rescue Department offers free smoke alarms to city residents.  For more information on this program, call 703-257-8458.
