It’s Farmer’s Market Week! Most produce is chemical-free at Gainesville market on Thursdays

The Farmers Market at The Marque at 13550 Heathcote Boulevard is a handy one for those getting off Interstate 66 after a long trek home from the office or for those living in the Gainesville-Haymarket areas.

Kathryn Willis, the market’s manager, has seen it grow over the years. Each Thursday, from 2-6 p.m., during the months of May until November, patrons can choose among 15 to 20 vendors.

Most of the produce is chemical free; depending on the month, a large variety of vegetables and fruits is available. In addition to farm fresh produce, the market offers baked goods; honey; olive oil; meats, including pork, chicken and beef; kombucha, a fermented Russian tea; Honduran coffee; pickles and soaps. This year, the market has also added artwork and jewelry to its list of vendors.

Especially popular with the nearby residents and commuters is the barbeque booth, which offers barbecued pork, chicken and beef sandwiches and platters as well as ribs. This is an easy dinner to take home after a long day.

The Pure Natural Honey vendor is one of Marque resident Richard’s favorite booths to visit. He said, holding a large jar of the honey, “It is the best honey in the world. It is wonderful.”

Cathie Grant always picks up a few muffins each week from Baguettes Republic. “They are always fresh and wonderful. Their flavor is great,” she said.

Willis explained the market is open rain or shine except if violent weather is predicted. She sends out a newsletter for the patrons; to sign-up, residents can email her at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
