If you are visiting the farmer’s market in Bristow at Piney Branch Elementary School on Sunday, you must take a taste from Absolute BBQ. The smell leads you to this vendor and you can’t help but follow your nose. New owner, Hal Thomas, serves up some great sandwiches and sides. They usually have tables for patrons who want to eat on site or carry something home for the whole family.
Their restaurant is located at 7422 Old Centreville Road in Manassas with a larger menu. More information about catering and hours can be found at http://www.eatabsolutebbq.com.
Louis Zutrez, of Little Green Farm in Spotsylvania, and his son, Alfredo, 14, are familiar faces at the market and are always happy to help shoppers with fresh fruit and vegetables from their farm.
Emmanuel Sarkodie, originally from Ghana, is a partner with Valley View Bakery out of Lorton. One cannot help, but be tempted by their yummy handmade pastries, bread and desserts including chocolate croissants.
Cakes by Shelby’s gingerbread house is typically at the market with cupcakes and other goodies.
If you are eating clean, Curt Shade of Shade Farm goes “above and beyond” organic. It is Shade’s first year at the market. He sells various produce, sprouts and herbs. He uses no chemical fertilizers and no insecticides or pesticides.
Heritage Kettle Corn is a must stop for adults and kids alike. Abbie and Ron Pence have been serving up their sweet and salty kettle corn for 15 years and the only market you can find them at is the one in Bristow. They have several sizes for you select from and a punch card that rewards your purchases. They also have iced tea to quench your thirst.
Tyson’s Farm, out of Hedgesville, West Virginia has fresh fruit and vegetables-although one customer teased them a bit since tomatoes weren’t in yet. Her friend teased that she only buys one a week anyway. They farm 100 acres. At the beginning of July they had great deals on blueberries.
Robby Jackson and Max Tyson III were helping customers with their choices. Tyson says he is from a family of farmers and says there is nothing else he would rather be doing. Jackson and Tyson also seem to really enjoy chatting it up with the shoppers and knew many of them from their weekly visits.
Last year Holly Brook Farms, from Berryville, had vegetables, but this year Mike Burner, owner, is concentrating on meats such as grass fed lamb and beef. He also has soy free Cornish game hens. They also have a very pretty assortment of eggs and may have duck eggs later in the season. Items can be ordered to pick up or purchased right at the market. He also may have tomatoes and peppers later in the season.
Holly Brook also has jams made from the market’s herbs and fruit. A popular new jam this year is strawberry-tarragon which has been the talk of the market for the past few weeks.
