Intermittent closings this weekend on I-95 northbound near Dale City for Powell’s Creek work

DALE CITY – The northbound I-95 general purpose lanes will have lane closures, weather permitting, Friday night, April 5 and Saturday night, April 6 around mile marker 155 between the Dale City Truck-Only Safety Rest Area North and Cardinal Drive for Powells Creek bridge work, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The lane closures along the northbound I-95 general purpose lanes are scheduled to occur as follows:

• 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, April 5: One lane closed
• 11 p.m. Friday, April 5 to 6 a.m. Saturday, April 6: Two lanes closed

• 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. Saturday, April 6: One lane closed
• 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, April 6: One lane closed
• 11 p.m. Saturday, April 6 to 6:30 a.m. Sunday, April 7: Two lanes closed

• 6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday, April 7: One lane closed

On Saturday night, April 6, the slip ramp from the northbound I-95 general purpose lanes to the northbound-running 95 Express Lanes near the project will remain open at all times (the slip ramp will be closed Friday night, April 5 due to the 95 Express Lanes running southbound at that time).

Once the work is completed Sunday morning, April 7, the northbound I-95 general purpose lanes will be shifted to the left along the bridge over Powells Creek until this summer.

Drivers should expect delays and are advised to use alternate routes.

The work is part of the I-95 over Powells Creek Bridge Rehabilitation Project, which is improving safety and extending the overall life of the northbound and southbound I-95 general purpose lanes bridges over Powells Creek. The bridges were built in 1963, repaired in 1976 and widened in 1981 and 1996. The project includes repairing steel beams and concrete abutments and piers, replacing bearings, closing deck joints and repainting the bridges. In addition, the deck of the northbound general purpose lanes bridge is being resurfaced. The project is scheduled for completion this summer.
