First grade teacher retires from Signal Hill Elementary

Past and present students and teachers of Signal Hill Elementary School (SHES) recently bade a fond farewell to long-time first grade teacher Maureen Matty.
Matty retired at the end of the 2010-11 school year after 35 years as a first grade teacher in Prince William County Schools (PWCS).
To honor the veteran teacher, the surprise celebration was planned and executed without a hitch. When principal Cindy Wrenn made the announcement that the event was to honor the well-liked first grade teacher, she was in total awe.
“Ms. Matty is without a doubt one of the best teachers I had at Signal Hill,” former student Tony Norberg, a ninth grade student at Osbourn Park High School, said. “I am so glad I was able to attend this celebration. I will always remember her,” he added.
Jacob Saunders, a fourth grade student, added that her class made learning a lot of fun. “Ms. Matty is the most dedicated Steelers’ fan I have ever met. She is always smiling and makes all of her students excited about learning. I’ll miss her very much,” he said with a smile.
While she may be officially retiring, Matty is not hanging up her teaching hat just yet. She is planning to participate in the PWCS Retirement Opportunity Program in the fall.
