First family medicine residents to start in July 2016 at Novant’s new medical school in NC

Beginning in 2016, residents who want to practice family medicine will have an opportunity to complete their training with the Novant Health Family Medicine Residency in Cornelius, NC.

Family medicine residency faculty members are actively interviewing fourth year medical students – six of whom will become Novant Health’s first resident physicians in July 2016.

Residents will complete three years of extensive training with rotations in community clinics as well as Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center, Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center and Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital.

Dr. David Cook, Novant Health’s senior vice president for population health and value based care, said NH was excited to begin its family medicine residency programs.“Our state and country so desperately need well-trained primary care physicians who can provide care with compassion and confidence,” he was quoted as saying in a press release.

“Our goal is to train young physicians to put the patient at the center of the health care paradigm and to create authentic, personalized relationships,” said Cook. “By teaching teamwork, evidence based medicine, collaboration within a health care system, innovation and leadership; our physicians will be equipped to deliver remarkable care.”

The Novant Health Family Medicine Residency Clinic has been several years in the making. Since the signing of an official statement of commitment letter Feb. 20, 2014, by Carl Armato, president and CEO of Novant Health, Novant Health has been working to expand its capabilities into the world of formal graduate medical education training.

Novant Health received a notice of accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Oct. 23, 2015. It was also granted accreditation from the American Osteopathic Association in November 2014. This gives Novant Health dual accreditation to train family medicine residents who have graduated from MD and DO medical schools.
