Bull Run Republican Women’s Club awards scholarship

The Bull Run Republican Women’s Club (BRRWC) has announced the 2020 Prince William County student winner of its annual Scholarship for Excellence in Scholastic Achievement and Leadership Qualities.

The 2020 scholarship recipient was home-school graduate Alyssa Mondarez of Manassas, with dual enrollment in Northern Virginia Community College. She will be attending Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio.

“Each year, BRRWC selects one outstanding female student in her senior year of high school who is preparing to attend college in the fall,” said BRRWC President Jan Burch. “Multiple applicants submitted scholarship applications and essays this year. All were well-qualified candidates, but one candidate was heads and shoulders above the rest.”

Students are asked to answer a variety of questions and to complete an essay. This year’s question was on how participating in local and state governments can have an impact.

Linh Collier, board member, and committee chair said “Although Alyssa’s academic achievements were enough to stand on alone, her essay really impressed the committee.”

One sentence stood out to the committee, according to Collier.

“In taking part of our community boards and leadership, we do our part in creating waves in the ripple effect that ultimately impact the world,” wrote Mondarez.

A ceremony to honor Mondarez will be held once the COVID restrictions are eased.

“Any educational institution would be lucky to have this accomplished young lady,” said Collier.
