Barry Barnard now Police Chief for Prince William County

Barry M. Barnard is the new Prince William County Chief of Police. Barnard had been acting Chief of Police following the retirement of Chief Hudson this spring and the same following the retirement of Chief Deane in 2012.

According to a county news release, he joined the Prince William County Police Department as a patrol officer in 1976 and “has had a stellar career.” He worked his way through the ranks. In 2000, he became the Assistant Chief of Police and then became Deputy Chief of Police in 2009, then twice served as acting Chief Police.

“Corey A. Stewart, Chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors, was quoted as saying in a press release, “With 40 years of service with the Prince William County Police Department, Barry Barnard…has demonstrated his ability to lead this department and to maintain the safety of the residents of Prince William County.”

“The Prince William Police Department is a dynamic group of men and women who selflessly serve this community,” Barnard was quoted as saying. “It is truly an honor to be named the new Chief of Police, and I am humbled to have the opportunity to serve alongside my fellow officers and county employees in this new capacity as we continue to make Prince William County a safe place to live, work and enjoy.”

Barnard received his Bachelor of Science degree in criminology from Florida State University and a Master of Public Administration from George Mason University. He and his wife live in Prince William County.
