Aden Rd. from Colvin Lane to Marsteller Drive to be closed starting July 9 for bridge reinstallation

Aden Road (Route 646) in Nokesville will be closed to through traffic between Colvin Lane and Marsteller Drive beginning Monday, July 9 until winter 2018-19 for crews to rehabilitate and reinstall the historic wrought-iron truss bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Residents and businesses within the closure area, emergency vehicles and school buses will have access to the closed portion of Aden Road; however, they will not be able to go beyond the railroad in either direction.

Traffic will be detoured via Aden Road, Fitzwater Drive (Route 652) and Route 28 back to Aden Road.

Built in 1882 for the Keystone Bridge Company, the original truss bridge was purchased in the early 1900s and moved to Aden Road by Norfolk Southern, who transferred ownership to VDOT in 2014.

The original project plans called for removing and repairing the historic truss bridge to reopen it for northbound Aden Road traffic, with a new bridge to carry southbound traffic. The newly constructed single-lane bridge opened to traffic in 2016. The old truss structure showed substantial structural deficiencies, so a revised design was developed with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and the community to allow the truss bridge to be rehabilitated as well as remain on the National Register of Historic Places.

The truss bridge is scheduled to open to northbound traffic, along with the new bridge reopening to southbound traffic this winter, with final project completion in spring 2019.
