Roads remain slick and hazardous as snow bands move through northern Virginia today, Wednesday, March 21. Virginia Department of Transportation asks drivers to continue to avoid driving for safety during the height of today’s winter storm, according to VDOT’s noon update received in the Observer office at 12:23 p.m.
Even roads where plows have made a pass can quickly become covered. While interstates are mostly wet, ramps and shoulders remain slush-covered. Primary and secondary roads across the region are snow-covered or slushy. Snowfall and vehicles kicking up slush are limiting visibility.
Crews are working to plow and treat all roads through the storm. When snow stops, crews will work to ensure roads are passable and to treat for potential refreeze.
Some reminders for today:
• High occupancy vehicle (HOV) restrictions are lifted on I-66 (inside and outside the Beltway) and on I-395 (from Edsall Road to D.C.) for the morning and afternoon rush hours today.
• Because HOV restrictions are lifted, tolls on the 66 Express Lanes inside the Beltway are also suspended today.
• Shoulder lanes on I-66 and I-495 may be closed through the day to allow crews room to plow and treat.
• The 95 Express Lanes will remain northbound through tomorrow morning’s rush hour.
Stay home and avoid driving as long as possible, once precipitation ends. Should the higher end of forecasts materialize and stick to the pavement, it will take some time to make a passable lane on all roads.
Plan—if you must travel—to allow plenty of time to clear your car, to drive at reduced speeds, and to expect hazardous road conditions. Use extreme caution on areas prone to freezing such as bridges, ramps and overpasses.

Keep cars in driveways or on the odd-numbered side of the street to allow plows a wider path on neighborhood streets.
Take frequent breaks, especially when shoveling heavy, wet snow.
