Two-day orientation held for 875 new PWC teachers and counselors Aug. 18-19

Prince William County Public School officials project that they will hire 875 teachers and counselors this fall, according to a news release.

The new educators participated in a two-day orientation and induction program—a conference on Aug. 18 at Freedom High School and an orientation at their schools on Aug. 19. A third day of professional development will take place in October.

The conference focused on the information teachers need to know about the School Division, including how to access support and resources they will need to prepare for the first day and week of school, the release said.

The PWCS teacher orientation and induction program was underwritten by Apple Federal Credit Union (AFCU) Education Foundation and sponsored by the PWCS Department for Human Resources and the Office of Professional Learning.

“This is always an exciting time for us,” Amy White, director of Human Resources, was quoted as saying in the news release. “Our teachers are committed to making a difference in the lives of students. They are so full of energy and excitement when they come together and meet other new teachers.”

The School Division said its induction program provides all teachers and counselors new to PWCS professional growth opportunities throughout the year that promote student achievement and teacher success. The program aims to build a support system for these new staff members as they are faced with the diverse learning needs of students. Teachers and counselors will receive ongoing support from their school principal, lead mentor, and mentor.
