Recycling this spring can create more garage or basement space, bring in extra cash through a reward and save you money through lowering your electric bill if you are a Dominion Power customer. All it takes is a decision to part ways with an old inefficient refrigerator or freezer, says a Dominion Virginia Power news release.
Dominion offers customers a $50 rebate for having older, energy-wasting refrigerators or freezers picked up for free to be recycled. These appliances often pre-date higher energy efficiency standards set for newer models, and removing one from your home can save you over $100 annually on your electricity bill, the release stated.
Michael Hubbard, Manager, Energy Conservation, for Dominion Virginia Power, noted that all it takes is a phone call or a visit to the website to schedule an appointment and have that energy guzzler hauled away.
To schedule a free home pickup for recycling, Dominion customers should call 1-868-366-8280 or visit dom.com/appliancerecycling. Appliances to be recycled must be at least 10 years old, in working order and have 10 to 32 cubic feet of capacity by inside measurements.
According to the news release, the old units are sent to a demanufacturing facility operated by ARCA, a leading national provider of appliance recycling services. Most of the materials in each unit are recycled and then become materials used in items like consumer electronics, beverage containers and the roads people drive on every day.
“It’s a great deal any way you look at it. You make money, we do all the work, and you save money while doing your share to protect the environment,” said Hubbard.
