The customized version of the Circle of Six U mobile app lets users notify a pre-selected network of contacts with just a subtle click. They can provide a ride, much-needed presence, a phone call, or advice to get the user out of risky or uncomfortable situations. It lets “Friends Help Friends Stay Safe.”
The app is not a substitute for calling 911. But even in less urgent situations it provides GPS information to bring friends exactly where they’re needed.
“This will be great when someone is worried about getting home safely, is uneasy with strangers, or simply needs a call or text to pull them away from an uncomfortable situation,” said Carolyn Custard, Director of Student Services. “It’s helped college students avoid date-related violence, and it can do much more to give students a one- touch path to safety and peace of mind.
Search for “Circle of 6 U” to find and download the free mobile app from Apple’s App Store or Google Play.
Install and select Prince William County Schools, then start building the circle of friends, family or others you can count on. Circle of 6 U-PWCS is intended for users 13 and older, or with parental permission. It includes links to advice hotlines that offer information which may be too intense for younger users.
A grant from the Potomac Health Foundation allowed the PWCS Office of Student Services to customize the app and provide the free offer. “It’s free, but the safety and comfort it provides are worth their weight in gold,” added Custard. Contact the Office of Student Services at 703-791-7257 for information.
