Update on I-66 eastbound tomato truck fire below US 15 Bridge from Supervisor Candland

The outstanding men and women of the Fire and Rescue Departments of Prince William County and surrounding jurisdictions have been working hard all day with V-DOT in the hot weather to clear I-66 near Haymarket and ensure the nearby Route 15 overpass is safe.

We’re very grateful that Interstate 66 westbound is now completely open, and 66 Eastbound should resume normal operations by rushhour today. Route 15 is now open in both directions as the bridge did not sustain any serious damage.

Below I’ve attached the recent social media post by the Prince William Department of Fire and Rescue. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Tomato Truck Crash Update: 18 Wheeler Tractor trailer struck guard rail ripping saddle tank opena and off of truck. 100-150 gals diesel. Truck caught fire. Extensive clean up and assessment by VDOT for bridge stability. Truck came to rest and fire under the Route 15 overpass. There were minor injuries to the driver who was pulled from the truck by construction workers. Prince William DFR crews along with help from Loudoun and Fauquier Fire and Rescue resources brought the fire under control quickly. This required using a rural water supply operation with tankers and dump tanks. VDOT and Virginia State Police will be handling traffic and road closure updates.
