Traffic stop goes awry on I-95; county police officers respond to assist fellow officer

Attempted Malicious Wounding of a Law Enforcement Officer [LEO] – On August 18 at 11:56AM, a Prince William County police officer was in the area of Jefferson Davis Hwy and Joplin Rd in Triangle (22172) when a vehicle was observed disregarding a red light. The officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle on northbound I-95, according to Sgt. Jonathan Perok, police department spokesman.

When contact was made with the driver, identified as the accused, the officer observed drug paraphernalia in the passenger compartment. During the encounter, the accused reached underneath the driver’s seat and refused to comply with the officer’s commands. At one point, the accused retrieved a plastic container from underneath the seat and attempted to consume the contents, which was later determined to be marijuana, Perok said.

When the officer attempted to take the accused into custody, a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the accused attempted to push the officer into traffic while striking him in the upper body. The officer deployed pepper spray before additional officers arrived and detained the accused without further incident. Minor injuries were reported by the officer, according to the police report

The accused was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries then remanded at the Adult Detention Center. Following the investigation, the accused, identified as Azher Mustafa RAFAT, was arrested, Perok said.
