Stewart to propose tax reform to raise $14 million more annually for schools and public safety

Corey A. Stewart, chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors, says he will unveil a five-year plan today, April 17, “to reduce the tax burden on County residents and provide significant new funding for schools and public safety.”

According to an early morning news release from Stewart, under his plan, “data centers will be required to pay the same personal property tax rate as County residents and other types of businesses. The additional revenue generated by this plan will be used to reduce the tax burden on County residents by $14 million per year, for a total savings of over $70 million over the course of the five-year plan.”

According to Stewart’s news release, his proposal “will eliminate a special tax carve-out for big data corporations. My plan will fund our schools, retain more of our public safety personnel, improve our waterways, and cut taxes for County residents.”

Stewart planned to formally present his proposal at today’s meeting of the Board of County Supervisors. The board is scheduled to vote on tax rates and the final budget for July 1, 2018-June 30, 2019 next Tuesday, April 24.
