State rugby championships May 30 at Patriot for high school boys and girls teams

High school boys and girls rugby State Championships will be held Saturday May 30 at Patriot High School in Nokesville. Gates will open at 9 a.m. with numerous matches throughout the day, that will conclude by 7 p.m., according to a news release from Rugby Virginia State-based Rugby Organization (SRO), the USA Rugby sanctioned organization for high school and youth rugby development in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

A nominal entry fee will be charged for spectators/non-participants.

The championship event will consist of the upper level State Championships, lower High School Boys & Girls Division “North Cup,” a Middle School Girls exhibition match, and High Performance scrimmages.

The State championship event is being hosted by the Prince William Youth Rugby Football Club and staged by the Rugby Virginia SRO Event Committee.

During the just completed spring season, 22 clubs from across the state comprising 20 high school boys teams, eight high school girls teams, 11 boys middle school teams, and five girls middle school teams competed to determine the finalists for the state championships.

The hard work of coaches and administrators, support from parents, and the demonstrated skill and efforts of the players culminate each Spring at this event.  Everyone’s hard work is paying off, and it is clear that high school and youth rugby continues to grow in Virginia, according to a news release.

In addition to those players who will participate in the scrimmages during the May 30 event, players from the finalist teams will be selected to represent Rugby Virginia at the Regional Cup Tournament (RCT) to be held on June 20-21 in Pittsburgh, PA, where High School All-American selectors will be on-hand during the RCT to judge candidates for continued participation in the HSAA program.
