Prince William County Schools to open Aug. 31, 2015 - a week before Labor Day

Prince William County School Board members voted unanimously to use a snow-day-related waiver from Virginia’s opening day restrictions to allow the early start of school next fall—on Aug. 31, 2015.

The Board considered delaying the vote until January to give residents more time to digest the changes. Ultimately, the board members decided that benefits such as the longer winter break, more instructional days prior to testing, and the earlier summer closing date merited the immediate decision.

According to a news release from the school community relations office, the calendar change has no impact on the length of teacher contracts, and adds no extra days for students. School will open in 2015 only a day earlier than it did in 2014.

Full listings of both the original and adopted Pre-Labor Day Opening options, as well as comparisons key differences between the options, are posted on the PWCS website as well as in BoardDocs.

Following the December 3 meeting, PWCS staff did further research into a pre-Labor Day opening. Virginia Department of Education staff confirmed that PWCS would qualify for a waiver based on a mathematical average of the five highest “snow day” totals from the past 10 years. As a result, the calendar committee was reconvened and recommended the pre-Labor Day option for consideration by the Board.

The standard option would have started school Tuesday, September 8 (due to the date of Labor Day 2015) and ended school on Thursday, June 23. The winter break in that option would not have been the full two weeks.
