Two meetings are scheduled for the public to learn more about strategies being considered to transform 25 miles of Interstate 66 between the Beltway and Haymarket. A Jan. 30 meeting is in Fairfax. A Feb. 5 meeting is in Prince William County. Details below.
The idea is to turn the interstate into a “multi-modal facility that moves traffic and people more efficiently,” according to a press release issued by the Virginia Department of Transportation.
During the Tier 1 process, VDOT and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) identified ten concepts that would increase capacity, provide multi-modal options, improve individual interchanges, and address safety and operations.
In November, private sector ideas, innovative approaches, and suggestions were received from the Request for Information and will be shared.
Meetings in Fairfax and Prince William will explain the Record of Decision on the Tier 1 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that was issued by the Federal Highway Administration in November, and next steps as one or more improvement concepts are considered in a Tier 2 environmental study(s).
