Learn about starting and running a small farm on Feb. 11 in Warrenton

Stephen and Amanda Day, proprietors of Starstead Farm in Culpeper County, will talk about “Starting and Running a Small Farm” in the John Barton Payne Building, Warrenton, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, as part of Fauquier County’s 2018 Sunday with the Library series.

Stephen and Amanda began their market gardening business in 2014 at Stephen’s family acreage in Culpeper. Selling under the name Starstead Farm, they grow on one acre, supplying fresh produce for two farmers’ markets and a 40-member Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA).

From the beginning Stephen and Amanda’s goal has been to be a profitable and responsible small-scale, fresh vegetable production.

Their lessons learned will be of interest to those beginning a for-profit garden, looking for tips to improve a kitchen garden, or curious about how to get a small business underway. The program will focus on setting priorities for the early years, choosing growing methods, and producing for markets and CSAs.

Sunday with the Library is a series of free monthly programs offered by Fauquier County Public Library and sponsored by Friends of the Fauquier Library. Unless otherwise noted, programs are held at 2 p.m.

Upcoming program topics include:
March 11: Virginia Working Landscapes, presented by the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (Marshall Community Center)
April 18:  Working Dogs of Fauquier County, presented by Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office, K-9 Unit (John Barton Payne Bldg.)
May 6: Unlikely but Exciting: The Writing and Film Adventures of Mystery Author Suzi Weinert, featuring Suzi Weinert (John Barton Payne Bldg)
