Donation Place @ PWC Landfill to be shuttered Oct. 1 for unspecified period

Beginning Oct. 1,  The Donation Place @ The Landfill at Independent Hill in Prince William County will be temporarily closed to find a new operator and to make necessary repairs to the building that houses the program. 

The County’s Solid Waste Division, which operates the Landfill, is evaluating alternatives for the program and trying to identify the right kind of partner(s) to operate the facility once the building improvements are complete, according to a county news release.

“The Solid Waste Division remains committed to offering reuse programs at its’ two citizen convenience sites, but right now we need to take some time to improve our facility and to try to find the right type of operator,” Scott MacDonald, Recycling Program Manage, was quoted as saying in the news release.  “Our goal is to keep this material out of the landfill, which will extend the life of the landfill and give these materials additional useful life.”

Residents are encouraged to donate reusable clothing, shoes and textiles as well as larger household items and furniture to not-profit organizations like ACTS, B-Thrifty, Carousel Consignments, Community Thrift Consignment Solutions, Goodwill, GreenDrop, Habitat Restore, Salvation Army, SAVERS, Sisters Thrift & Consignment, Village Economy Stores, Vincent DePaul Thrift Shop, Your Favorite Boutique or other businesses and charities that accept reusable items.  For now, residents will not be able to donate or leave these items at Prince William County Solid Waste Facilities.

In preparation for the closing, Solid Waste staff has updated its website listing of area second hand, thrift, and consignment shops.
