Community comes together at Feb. 28 vigil for slain PWC Police Officer Ashley Guindon

An estimated 1,000 people turned out at the Prince William County Government Complex in Woodbridge VA the night of Sunday, Feb. 28, to pay tribute to Prince William County Police Officer Ashley Guindon, who was shot and killed on Saturday, Feb. 27, while responding to a domestic-related shooting in Woodbridge near the county complex.

The crowd drew together by candlelight – embracing each other, comforting each other and showing their love and appreciation for Guindon and her fellow officers.

Police Chief Stephan Hudson said, “She was passionate about law enforcement. We were blessed to have her,”  as he addressed the crowd.

The fact that Guindon was a newly sworn officer, serving on her first shift for the Prince William County Police Department, made the loss even more tragic, it seemed.

“Ashley just started her career here in Prince William County,” Marty Nohe, Coles District Supervisor, was quoted as saying in a county press release. “I never had the opportunity to know her, to speak with her, to see what type of career she might make for herself here in our community. And now, sadly, I never will.”

People from across the county came out Sunday evening to honor and remember Guindon. They also came to embrace her fellow officers in this very tragic moment.

“There is a bond among everyone in the law enforcement community,” Hudson noted.

And that bond was seen throughout the evening. In addition to the numerous citizens and Prince William County Police who came out in support, there were State Troopers, police from other jurisdictions in the National Capitol Region, retired police officers, families and friends all in attendance.

“This is a sad day,” Corey Stewart, chairman of the Board of County Supervisors, was quoted as saying in the press release.

“The men and women of our Police Department are heroes. They sacrifice their lives for us every day. But we can never truly be prepared for such a tragic loss. Ashley Guindon will not be forgotten. Her sacrifice will leave a mark on all of our lives forever.”
