Children’s Science Center Lab to unveil new exhibits at day full of celebrations July 24

The Children’s Science Center Lab at Fair Oaks Mall will celebrate its first birthday on Sunday, July 24, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a day full of free or $1 festivities and unveiling of two big, new “gifts.”

The Lab is located inside the main mall entrance between Sears and Lord and Taylor at 11750 Fair Oaks Mall, Fairfax, Va. 22033.

General admission to the Children’s Science Center Lab from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. will be $1 all day, a birthday present from its Fair Oaks Mall neighbor, Macy’s. The general public is welcome to attend and be among the first to explore our two new exhibits.

A free family Summer of Science Celebration with hands-on activity tables and entertainment will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. the mall’s Grand Court.

Activities are health and fitness themed to tie in with the Center’s Walk Run Bike Summer Challenge and include topics such as calculating basal metabolic rate, determining the amount of fat naturally occurring in foods, how energy is transferred, and how electricity can be generated on a bicycle.

Entertainment will include the nationally acclaimed natural science song and dance man, Billy B., and the opportunity to meet celebrity cyclist, Tim Hoffman from Cycle 4 STEM who will be biking 4,200 miles across America to benefit the Center.

The center will receive “birthday presents,”  a Robotic Arm Challenge, from Booz Allen Hamilton. This is described as “a one of a kind interactive technology exhibit that allows visitors to program an industrial robotic arm to complete fun tasks, the Music, Emoji, and Marble challenges.

The second gift are Aquatic Life exhibits that will be home to seahorses and many other children’s favorite sea animals with new learning aquariums in the Experiment Bar and Discovery Zone galleries.

Also Northwest Federal Credit Union representatives will present their $75,000 sponsorship of the Discovery Zone gallery which is designed to inspire budding scientists ages 5 and under.

The Children’s Science Center Lab is Northern Virginia’s first interactive museum where children, families and school groups can explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts through fun, engaging hands-on exhibits, activities and programs.

In addition to four experience zones with changing exhibits and activities, the Lab includes a flex-space “Garage” for camps, classes, workshops, parties and mini expositions to showcase regional STEM talent in-action among area youth and families. The Children’s Science Center’s mission is to instill a love of learning STEM in all children by providing unique opportunities to explore, create and be inspired.  The Children’s Science Center is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization.
