All PWC students to get free breakfast at school Sept. 29

Students at all Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) will get breakfast “on the house,” Friday, September 29, to remind families of the importance of giving students healthy fuel for learning.

PWCS serves students an estimated 56,000 lunches daily, but fewer than half those students eat school breakfast.

“We hope to give the students and their familes a taste of what they’re missing,” said Adam Russo, Director of Food and Nutrition Services. “Hungry kids face challenges with concentration and learning, so sampling the breakfast program may be just what they need to feed success.”

The free breakfast day will highlight a number of PWCS initiatives, including “grab & go” and “second chance” breakfast programs, that make it easy for all students to get a healthy start, while eliminating any stigma associated with taking advantage of school meals.

Free breakfasts on September 29 will be provided to students at no cost to the School Division. Food and Nutrition Services pays for itself by operating efficient and cost-effective eateries at every school and other Division facilities. The free breakfast day is their investment in promoting those operations, while delivering on the Division’s commitment to educating every student and fighting hunger.

The event coincides with Feed Virginia Day of Action events across the Commonwealth. Virginia First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe will visit PWCS’ Potomac High School to see how healthy eating and learning go hand-in-hand in the school’s Second Chance Breakfast program.
