A local business, a GMU academy, a nonprofit group and PWCSA honored for school partnerships

SPARK, the education foundation for Prince William County Schools, recently recognized business and community partnerships at a dinner and School Board meeting. Each year, the PWCS Office of Community and Business Engagement works closely with business leaders in the community to identify business and community partnerships making the most positive impact on academics and student achievement.

Presented with a Partnership of the Year award were: Assistance League of Northern Virginia, nominated by Loch Lomond and Yorkshire Elementary Schools; IBS Millwork, nominated by the Office of Career and Technical Education; and Mason Game and Technology Academy – Virginia Serious Game Institute, nominated by Stonewall Middle School. The Community Partner of the Year award was presented to the Prince William County Service Authority, nominated by Penn Elementary School

“These Partnerships of the Year set the bar for what makes a strong and effective collaboration between a school and its community,” Dr. Babur Lateef, interim Chairman At-Large for the School Board, was quoted as saying in a news release.

The Assistance League of Northern Virginia provides coupons for free haircuts and shoes, weekend food assistance, library books, clothing, toiletries and school supplies for Loch Lomond and Yorkshire Elementary Schools. They also provide mentors and tutors.

IBS Millwork works closely with the cabinet-making specialty program at Hylton High School, providing job opportunities for students pursuing a career in woodworking. Mason Game and Technology Academy- Virginia Serious Game Institute has made learning fun for students struggling in the classroom by integrating gaming into the curriculum. They have also sponsored the Cyber Patriot team at Stonewall Middle School.

The Service Authority serves as an environmental steward in our schools by providing workshops and in-classroom water conservation. They also support the Prince William County Science Fair and host the Annual Water Art Invitational.
